Renewable scholarships of up to $500 are offered each year for full-time study at an accredited institution of the student’s choice. The maximum value of the scholarship is $2000. The scholarship is administered by the Buffalo Rugby Club and the Patel family and awarded with the cooperation of RugbyNY.

To be considered for the scholarship a boy or girl must be nominated by their rugby coach. They must respond to the nomination by writing an essay and taking part in an interview. The nominating essays and player essays are evaluated by a panel comprised of members of the Board of Directors of RugbyNY.

The Buffalo Rugby Club and the Patel family established The Kamil Patel Memorial Rugby Scholarship to honor the memory of Kamil Patel.

In January 2018, a week before his 30th birthday, his life was ended in a random act of violence in Miami Beach Florida.

Kamil was a multi-sport athlete in high school at Williamsville East. He started playing rugby with his brother Dannish and friends on the Kenmore East community-based high school team. He went on to play at the University of Buffalo and with the Buffalo Rugby Men’s Club.

Although Kamil was a very good athlete and an exceptional rugby player, it was not those attributes which endeared him to his coaches, teammates, family, and friends. He was the exceptional individual who thrived on bringing people together. He always had a smile. Kamil’s joy for life and his love for people made him an unforgettable person within the rugby community.

Donations to help sustain and expand the scholarship fund can be made at kamilpatelscholarship.org
